ShoutAbout (Private Voice Dictation)

Project overview

Free, open-source voice dictation for Windows, Mac and iPhone. Your voice never leaves your own devices.

Good dictation usually means sending your voice to someone else's cloud or paying a monthly fee. ShoutAbout does neither. Tap Right Ctrl (Right Command on a Mac), talk, tap again, and clean text is pasted wherever you're typing. No account, no cloud.

Speech recognition runs locally with Whisper, which automatically picks a model size to suit your hardware. An optional local language model tidies punctuation and filler words, with a safety check in code that falls back to the raw transcript if the model starts rewriting or "answering" what you said. On my desktop, a typical 6–9 second dictation comes back in about 300 milliseconds.

The iPhone app can act as a wireless microphone for your computer: it finds the PC on your Wi-Fi and pairs with a 4-digit code. Or it can transcribe on the phone by itself.

I sweated the small stuff that makes a tool feel trustworthy: it restores whatever was on your clipboard after pasting and never presses Enter for you. The brand, a yellow shouting mouth, carries from the system-tray icon through the website. It's open source under the MIT license, with a Windows installer, a Mac app and an iPhone app all built by CI.
